dreamsLate Dec. Dream Fragments

Streets teem with violence as protesters clash with police. The country is in full revolt against the government and our cluster has worked out an efficient force of disobedience. Large, full-back-sized men rush the police line as scrawny men pull up pavement stones with small metal pry bars.

I crouch down close to the street, pulling up stones with my tool. I quickly hand the stones to the large men who hurl them at the police. The hurlers seem invincible to the concussion grenades, tear gass, and rubber bullets. All the pullers jump around, dodging the police ordnance, and keep pulling up ammo for the hurlers. I feel exhausted but am using the adrenaline to keep fighting.

Raivolution-The debut album from singer MC RAI. A hard hitting collection of tracks that brings the underground alternative music world to the doorstep of the Sahara. The disk spans the range of styles with Arabesque bumping grooves, Raggaton, Indy Rock, Hip Hop and straight up Rock Anthems. Although the vocals are in Arabic, the emotion that comes off the music is universal and heartfelt.

dearest radical + exotic Organisms,

Warm and plant-like INVITE to Podp’s FIRST 2xX cd Releases Party !!

Podp mixes radical world, global electronica, and recombined bits from the mass media wash cycles into “Pan Optic Radio” Soundscapes for Indymedia and radio worldwide, and occasionally as LiVe performance in special locations conducive to Art and Politics and bridging Theater of Cruelty with resistance. A movement which exists at least since John Heartfield, J.J. Grandville, or Bosch. Today it’s called Culture Jamming.*

In the last few years, Pan Optic has also become an Ost Bloc musika magnet…which is to say: the cruelty reaches a danceable phase, like a war cry at full moon, or lovers in their womb fleeing from the world.

Save Al’s Comics

Donate to Save Al’s Comics (or offer a store to rent)

When I moved to San Francisco in 1997, one of the top priorities of my transition was to find a local comic store to patronize. This may humor those of you who do not collect or read graphic novels (comics), but I liken it to the drinker who finds a local bar to call home. I have read, collected, and bought comics for most of my life, and at the time read several titles that had 10 to 30 year story lines (Cerebus and Bone). Finding a local store, setting up a subscription bag, and bugging the owner provides me with quality living through culture and community.

dreamsPlate of Cheese

A friend is having a party and Deborah is there. While I leisurely paint on a piece of art, Deborah runs about setting up food dishes. I only want to eat cheese and continue painting. As people start to arrive, Deborah gets angry at me and insists that I help her help our mutual friend. I say no, I just want cheese, and then accidentally drip paint on the painting.

A History of the Crankie

Before the invention of the modern cranky, the Japanese used scroll paintings that were influenced by Chinese scroll paintings. There was also an older form called a cantastorie. This device had images painted on fabric, telling stories in sequential order much like graphic novels of today.

The SF Weekly describes a cranky as a “primitive, miniature theater in a box: a roll of paper painted with pictures that tell a story, cranked by hand past an open frame. (The person doing the cranking often narrates and provides sound effects too…).” Though the parts can change, canvas instead of paper for example, this is an apt description.

New Years, Death, and Fall

Fall has always been my favorite season. As a child, turning leaves meant that the brutal heat and thunderstorms of summer were going away. Cooler weather and shorter days meant interesting views through naked trees and muted tones of reds, yellows, and browns. Since moving to San Francisco, I discovered that fall time is the Witches New Years (Samhain, pronounced sow-wan) and is also Yom Kippur for the tribes of Israel. Both of these holidays deal with aspects of death and rebirth.

createThin Veil, Frail Thin

leaves curling
drying, dieing
comes the season
rolling in to dark

rolling in to dark
night grows longer
trees grow bare
living, dieing
thin veil, frail thin

thin veil, eternal marriage
two to one
nature’s true bonds
carbon to carbon
dust blows, prayers fly
