puppets4/1/2006: Performing at PuppetLOVE!

After a year off, PuppetLOVE! will once again take the stage for a night of mature, diverse puppet performances. I have been in this festival several times in the past, once with my puppet creation, DJ Organik, and another time with the Monkey Thump Puppet Collective (that was the notorious, rated X Monkey Du Sade, complete with BDSM and ravaging banannas doing the can can). This year I’ll be performing a shadow puppet work-in-progress with Christine Marie (Shadowlight), Mia Rovegno (Hummingbird Works) and others. Playing with shadows is always fun, and making the puppets, screen, etc. is part of why I love puppetry.

So, come out and see me do puppets one last time before I head East to do that political carnie thang! This show will sell out due to being one night only at the tiny CounterPULSE space.

dreamsDream of a Grecian Demon

I arrive in Greece for a much-needed vacation and go straight to an art gallery that I’ve visited in a previous dream. The gallery is part of a maze of stalls (souks) and appears to be closing. The workers don’t greet me as well as I expected, but I shop anyway. I find a large-format ‘zine about a recent Sub-Genius zombie peace action in San Francisco. The ‘zine even has a fold-out poster drawn by Paul Mavrides.

I go up to the counter to buy the magazine, but they’ve closed. The workers pass me, headed to the back of the gallery. I just noticed a baked apple dessert on a table back there so wonder if that’s what they’re interested in.

polotics Recent Memes: Civil War and Secession

I have mentioned in past posts that I take notice when a topic comes to me from different sources. This past week, after the violence in Iraq, a new movie release, a roommate’s offering maps and calendars on 19th century USA history, a puppet who is running for California’s governor, and a conversation with a friend from South Carolina, the phrases “secession” and “civil war” became prominent in my thoughts.

Here’s an event I’m working on as stage manager. The band is top-notch, the acts are worthy, and the food will be much better than the food we had for the Puppet Supper (no offence, but Circo Romani actually has a big food budget and authentic Romani delights)!

sound2/4/2006: DJ HappyFt @ Mixtape Vol. 2

New Year’s night, Tim Barsky wandered up to the Big Tadoo puppet stage at the Sea of Dreams. We ended up hanging out, having a great discussion about history, and he asked me to perform at the Everyday Theatre (EDT) afterparty in early February.

He showed up at the puppet stage a few hours later, and asked if he could beatbox. I said sure, and helped him set up the PA and mic. It was late (Tim’s stint on mic could have been the last performance in the whole Sea of Dreams show) and the PA was loud. He lasted 5 minutes before security tried to shut us down twice. I cut Tim short and he finished at the same time a security guard approached him to tell him to quit.

I have a special place in my heart for beatboxing (Yuri Lane, and Mixtape from Mars with Kid Beyond have been in two of my shows), especially when the performer is a radical storyteller like Tim. Please join us this Sat. to “pass the hat” for Everyday Theatre:

create1/30/2006: Al’s Comics Moving Party


Update:
Al just signed a 1-year lease for the old Limelight Bookstore at Octavia and Market. He’ll be closed for a few days but will reopen soon! See you tonight for the celebration.

Well, Al’s lost his space and is still looking for a new one. He’s had nibbles for new space, and has gotten tremendous support from his community of customers. A slew of folks are standing by waiting to help him haul out his many boxes of books and things.

For now, Al wishes to show his appreciation by having one last gasp (pardon the pun) in his Gurrero St. (@17th St.) “joint.” Should be a scene next Monday.

NeoMysticism for Serious Times with the Secret Chiefs 3

Live music moves me deeply in my heart and soul. I realized in the early 1990s that certain kinds of music pulsed and lived through me. I knew because I’d hear a band and instantly remember their melodies (not their lyrics). Seeing some of these groups live, and hearing the music with my whole body, I would trance out and sometimes dance myself into exhaustion. These neomystic events come to me as a gift, and I have been moved by bands like Phish, Beck, Yair Dalal, Emil Zrihan, Ozric Tentacles, and Radiohead.

dreamsDream in the Old Mortuary

Someone sets people up to die or get arrested, so my father snoops around to try to figure out who it is. Since I am visiting, my father insists that I tag along. This makes me feel like a little boy again. As the snooping progresses, the situation becomes more serious, and Dad discovers that it is a close friend who is getting people in trouble. At last he figures out that Dan C. is responsible.

As a new year begins for those who live in the Common Era world, I have stepped back to ponder the flood of information that has flashed across my monitor these past twelve months. I have mentioned before that I constantly look for cracks within the media I see online. These cracks shed light on where things sit historically in the present moment, and allow me to gain possible choices for action in the future to bring about the changes in the world that I want to see.
