createBMIS Flyer Art

BMIS

Finished this flyer just in time before my departure East for Black Mesa Indigenous Support. I initially wanted to go on this caravan to help the people of Black Mesa, but I have been sent somewhere else. I’m glad that I got to be part of this via the flyer design and hope to go out there soon.

4/9/2006: Slow Foods Feast of Fools

OK, Sunday, April 9 will be the absolute last time that anybody can see me before I head East to VT, NJ, and IA (via SC) for my crazy, 6-month stint at being a political carny operator (many blog entries to follow I’m sure). Other than working one last shift at Teatro ZinZanni that day, I’ll be stage managing this unique night of slow food, performance, video, and talks. The Slow Foods Feast of Fools promises to open your eyes to the local food chain, the farmers and distributors who work locally, and the CounterPULSE community that supports local arts and communities. A bit on the pricey side, but all proceeds go to paying off the CounterPULSE debt.

I’ll be running around most of the night, doing my SM thing and making sure that everything runs smoothly. Kitchen a little behind on that course? We’ll extend the performance beforehand. You know, just like Circo Romani and the Funky Puppet Supper.

2/9-19/2006: Circo Romani

Here’s an event I’m working on as stage manager. The band is top-notch, the acts are worthy, and the food will be much better than the food we had for the Puppet Supper (no offence, but Circo Romani actually has a big food budget and authentic Romani delights)!

Come to Circo Romani for an evening and lose yourself in the Magical World of a traveling Gypsy Circus Troupe! Appearing in San Francisco, February 9-19, 2006!

Mesmerizing Magicians, Amazing Aerialists, Juxtaposing Jugglers, Delectable Dancers, a Rollerskating Bear, Confounding Contortionists, Gypsy Folk Musicians, a Fabulous Four-course Feast, and an Absurdly Tall Ringmaster.

create1/30/2006: Al’s Comics Moving Party

Update:
Al just signed a 1-year lease for the old Limelight Bookstore at Octavia and Market. He’ll be closed for a few days but will reopen soon! See you tonight for the celebration.

AlsParty

Well, Al’s lost his space and is still looking for a new one. He’s had nibbles for new space, and has gotten tremendous support from his community of customers. A slew of folks are standing by waiting to help him haul out his many boxes of books and things.

For now, Al wishes to show his appreciation by having one last gasp (pardon the pun) in his Gurrero St. (@17th St.) “joint.” Should be a scene next Monday.

A History of the Crankie

Before the invention of the modern cranky, the Japanese used scroll paintings that were influenced by Chinese scroll paintings. There was also an older form called a cantastorie. This device had images painted on fabric, telling stories in sequential order much like graphic novels of today.

The SF Weekly describes a cranky as a “primitive, miniature theater in a box: a roll of paper painted with pictures that tell a story, cranked by hand past an open frame. (The person doing the cranking often narrates and provides sound effects too…).” Though the parts can change, canvas instead of paper for example, this is an apt description.

createSat. 10/1: CELLspace is Legal Party

You heard that right!

We’re kicking off the P.O.E. (Place of Entertainment) month of festivities Octoberfest style.

Featuring the 1st ever CELLspace Talent Show
All current CELL members will be on stage for 45 seconds to 3 minutes, doing whatever the hell they want to up there. Should be strangely entertaining.

I’ll read from my journal of almost haiku. Who cares about structure, just make the poems short why doncha!

Also,
Sisters of the Underground
Dance Azteca
a band (name TBA)
DJ HappyFt (ME!) spinning funk, hip hop, and disco with an insane Balkan tune or two thrown in to get the heart pumping.

A DIY CELLspace gallery exhibit
