Seamlessly integrating projected shadows, live actors and an innovative sound score, Christine Marie and her collaborators draw on the history of electric light to manifest a flickering world of natural phenomena and human intervention. Large-scale imagery from simple handheld lights and props takes on mythological proportions as scientific discovery, religious folklore and magical trickery blend into an incandescent work of expressionist theater.

Shadows In Stereo, is an installation that provides a rare opportunity to create and experience stereoscopic 3D with one’s own shadow.

Guests are invited to wear anaglyph glasses as they traverse the gallery having their shadows projected 40’ high. Unlike a typical shadow, when viewed in 3D shadows do not cling to surfaces they move out into cubic space. A sense of somatic dislocation occurs that is surprising and delightful.

The viewing experience is created by hand made stereoscopic lights and glasses constructed by artist Christine Marie. The installation is a low- fi spectacle, more congruent with the light magic of Athanasius Kircher than the CG-Real-D digital work of James Cameron.

The experience is just as sensational appealing both to feeling of awe and an archetypal sense of wonder.

Installation created by Christine Marie. www.cimimarie.com

Soundscape by Aden Liggett.

On Friday, May 7, the de Young Museum presents another dynamic program, luminous projections, and book signing in the ongoing series Mission Muralismo, in conjunction with the recently published book Street Art San Francisco: Mission Muralismo, edited by Annice Jacoby for Precita Eyes Muralists, foreword by Carlos Santana (Abrams, 2009). The evening focuses on the talent and passionate work of major contributors to the book: Rigo, John Jota Leaños, Russell Howze, Jack Napier Billboard Liberation Front (BLF) co-founder, and Milton Rand Kalman BLF chief scientist.

The lecture/demonstration program will take place in the lobby of the Koret Auditorium starting at 6:45 pm with Russell Howze demonstrating stencil cutting and the process of working a stencil from start to finish. Visitors will have an opportunity to see completed stencils and work at his stencil station until 7:15 pm. Projections of Howze’s work will be shown in the Koret Auditorium.

At 7:15 pm. Rigo will open the lecture series in the Koret Auditorium with his talk “Artists Changing Directions: Mission Muralismo Pranksters and Punsters. Look up! Look down! Look all around! No surface is sacred. No billboard is safe. The Mission is a cauldron of clever, busy artists constantly stoking and provoking the public messages.”

7:40 pm John Jota Leaños presents “The (Postcolonial) Rules of Engagement: Cultural Activism and Xicana/o Digital Muralismo.”

8:00 pm Jack Napier BLF co-founder and Milton Rand Kalman BLF chief scientist will give a presentation on the art and science of billboard improvement.

Visitors are welcome to bring or purchase their Street Art San Francisco: Mission Muralismo books for signing by the featured artists and editor, Annice Jacoby, before and after the talks and stencil cutting demonstration.

Live music, hands on art-making and quilt-making demonstrations and a tour of Amish Abstractions: Quilts from the Collection of Faith and Stephen Brown Collection by Faith and Stephen Brown are also part of this great evening celebrating Americana and “Mission Muralismo.”

This “Mission Muralismo” series of lectures, performances, and more celebrates one of San Francisco’s greatest contributions to the artistic landscape—the Mission District artist community.

Friday night, May 7th, promises to be another fantastic event. The expanded “Mission Muralismo” series is created in partnership with Precita Eyes Muralists as part of Cultural Encounters: Friday Nights at the de Young.
